Reds crush Cubs, 14-3, to take series at Wrigley

Cincinnati homers seven times in series finale’

 

Cincinnati Reds’ fans were treated to a fireworks show of their own on Sunday afternoon, as their team homered seven teams in route to a 14-3 blowout victory of the Chicago Cubs.

Cincinnati Reds hats & apparel The Reds (47-36), who took the first two games of the series before losing on Saturday, battled back from a 2-0 deficit after two innings to go up 3-2 after 3.5. They extended that lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth, but the Cubs responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame to close to within two at 5-3.

However, Cincinnati blew it open in seventh when it blasted four long balls and pushed across eight runs.

Drew Stubbs’ three homerun effort highlighted the remarkable hitting display put on by the Reds during their series clinching victory. Paul Janish and Orlando Cabrera also had excellent days at the plate. Janish was 4-of-4 with three RBI while Cabrera went 3-of-5.

Starter Mike Leake (6-1) allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Nick Masset, Logan Ondrusek and Micah Owings all worked a scoreless inning of relief during which they also didn’t allow a hit.

Ted Lilly took the loss for Chicago. Lilly’s record falls to 3-7 after he surrendered nine runs—all earned—on 11 hits.
