Reds ride Arroyo to 3-1 victory in rubber gameCincinnati takes the series, 2-1, from the Mets
Bronson Arroyo, who collected his ninth win of the season, allowed just one run on seven hits over eight innings to propel his club to a 3-1 victory over the Mets at Citi Field on Wednesday. New York (47-38) did take a 1-0 lead in the first, but it would not score again. Cincinnati (49-37) knotted the game at one in the third on Brandon Phillips’ 12th homer of the season.
It remained 1-1 until the seventh when Chris Heisey broke the tie with his fifth long ball of the season. The lead grew to 3-1 when Phillips, who went 2-for-5, doubled later in the frame. Francisco Cordero came on in the ninth to record his 24th save of the season. The Mets’ Jonathan Niese pitched well in the loss. He fell to 6-3 on the year, but allowed just three runs on six hits in 7.2 innings of work. Niese struck out eight and walked just one. Angel Pagan and Josh Thole each had two hits to pace New York.
