Reds fall to Phillies, 1-0, in 11 innings

Philadelphia will attempt to sweep Cincinnati on Sunday

Cincinnati Reds hats & apparel A night after being unable to hold a six-run ninth inning lead, Cincinnati lost another heartbreaker when it dropped a 1-0 decision to Philadelphia in 11 innings.

The Reds (49-40), who have been the victim of three straight walk-off victories for the Phillies, received another stellar outing from rookie Travis Wood. Wood carried a perfect game into the ninth, but it was broken up when Carlos Ruiz led off the frame with a double. He did, however, escape the threat and finish his night with nine scoreless innings.

While Wood was holding down the Phillies’ bats, Roy Halladay was shutting out the Reds. Halladay allowed just five hits in his nine innings. He struck out nine and walked just one.

Ruiz, who had half his team’s hits, delivered his second double of the game with one out in the Phillies’ half of the 11th. Then, with two outs, Jimmy Rollins singled to right off Logan Ondrusek to plate the game’s only run.

Orlando Cabrera and Miguel Cairo had two hits apiece for the Reds.

Jose Contreras pitched a hitless 11th to pick up the win for Philadelphia.

Cincinnati will attempt to stave off the sweep this afternoon.
